Holding a Slope Takes More Than Stacking Rock

A slope that won’t hold. A yard that drops off too fast to use. A bank that washes out a little more each winter. When ground needs holding back, a boulder wall does the work and looks like part of the yard while it does it.

A boulder wall is built from natural stone, set piece by piece so it keys together and carries the weight of the ground behind it. It isn’t a run of manufactured blocks; it’s rock chosen and placed to do the job and stay put. We build them structural, to retain earth, and visual, to turn a steep or wasted slope into level, usable ground.

Victoria’s slopes, rock, and wet winters are hard on a wall that isn’t built right. We excavate a solid base, then set the boulders with the machine so each one locks into the next. We also build in the drainage a rock wall needs, drain rock and a drain line behind it, so water can’t push it out over the years. Built that way, it holds its ground for decades.

A boulder wall is only as good as the base under it and the drainage behind it. Both are earthworks, and that’s the part we know cold.

From the Quote to a Wall That Holds

We walk the slope and quote it straight. We look at the slope, the height you need to hold, how the water moves, and the access. Then we give you a written price and timeline.
We dig and build the base. The wall stands on excavation, so we dig the base in, level it, and compact it, because a boulder wall that shifts started with a base that did.
We set the boulders. We place each rock with the machine so it keys into the ones around it and the wall carries the load, then build in the drainage behind it as it goes up.
We backfill, grade, and clean up.
We backfill behind the wall, grade the ground around it, and tidy the site, then walk the finished wall with you.

With a boulder wall, the usual questions are what it costs, who supplies the rock, how tall it can go, and what keeps it standing.

How much does a boulder wall cost in Victoria, BC?

Boulder wall cost in Victoria depends on how long and how tall the wall is, the size of the boulders, how hard the base is to dig, and how easily equipment can reach the slope. A short garden wall is a different job from a tall wall holding a whole bank. Send photos and rough measurements and we'll give you an accurate written quote.

How long does a boulder wall take?

A short wall can be a couple of days. A tall wall, a long run, or hard digging takes longer, and you'll get an estimated timeline with your written quote.

Can you get equipment in to build a wall on a tight or sloped lot?

Yes. We use compact excavators that fit narrow access and work on grade, which is what setting boulders on a slope calls for. We plan the route and the staging in before the machines arrive.

Do you supply the boulders, or do I?

We source and haul in the rock. Boulders are sold by the ton and there's good local supply on the Island, so we bring in stone sized for your wall as part of the job. If there's suitable rock already on your property, we'll work it in where it makes sense, which can save you some cost. You don't need to track down or move anything yourself.

How tall can a boulder wall be?

A boulder wall can usually go up to around 5 feet, or about 1.5 metres, as a straightforward build. Past that, the weight and the pull of the ground behind it become bigger factors, so a taller wall generally needs an engineer's design, and often a permit, before it goes in. The exact height that triggers that depends on your municipality, so we look at your slope and tell you what your wall will need before any work starts.

Do boulder walls need drainage behind them?

Yes, and we build it in. Water collecting behind a wall is the main thing that pushes it out of place over time, so every wall we build gets drain rock and a drain line behind it to relieve that pressure before it becomes a problem.
