The Grade Is What Everything Else Sits On

Ground that isn’t graded right shows up fast. Water pools in the low spots, a new driveway sits off-level, and runoff heads for the house instead of away from it. The slope of the ground decides where water goes and how well whatever you put on top of it sits.

Land grading is the precise shaping of the ground to a set slope and level. We grade driveways, backyards, and pads so the surface sheds water and sits true, whether it’s about to be paved, poured, or planted. This is finish grading to a specific surface, not the rough clearing and levelling that comes earlier in a build.

Victoria’s ground rarely starts level. Rock, slopes, and clay all work against a clean grade. We shape it with compact excavators and laser and GPS gear. That laser grading hits an exact slope and level instead of getting close by eye, and on a big pad or a grade that has to meet a drainage spec, the GPS guidance keeps the whole surface true.

Grade it right once and you’re not chasing pooling water or a sunken slab later.

We read the ground and give you a straight quote. We look at the ground, the slope it has now, and what’s going on top, then give you a written price and timeline.
We shape the ground to grade. We cut down the high spots, fill the low ones, and move material until the ground sits at the slope and level the job needs.
We fine-grade the surface. Laser and GPS gear guides the final pass, so the surface hits the exact fall and level it’s supposed to, not just close enough by eye.
We check the grade and clean up.
We confirm the surface drains and sits true, then tidy the site and walk it with you before sign-off.

We initially discovered that under the thick ivy was nothing but rock, roots, and loose dirt—no stable ground for a fence. How much does land grading cost in Victoria, BC?

Grading cost in Victoria depends on the size of the area, how much cutting and filling it takes, whether there's rock in the way, and how easily equipment can reach the ground. A small backyard is a different job from a long driveway on a slope. Send photos and rough measurements and we'll give you an accurate written quote.

How long does grading take?

A small yard or pad is often a day or two. Larger areas, steep slopes, or a lot of cut and fill take longer, and you'll get an estimated timeline with your written quote.

Can you get equipment onto a tight or sloped lot?

Yes. We use compact excavators that fit narrow access and work on grade, so we can shape a back yard or a side lot that bigger machines can't reach without tearing it up. We plan the route in before the machines arrive.

Do you do laser and GPS grading to spec?

Yes. We grade with laser and GPS guidance, which lets us hold an exact slope and level across a whole surface. It matters most on large pads and on grades that have to meet a drainage or engineering spec, where close enough won't pass. Give us the numbers or the grade plan and we'll grade to them.

What's the difference between grading and site prep?

Grading is the precise surface work, bringing one area to an exact slope and level for what's going on top. Site prep is the bigger first stage of getting a raw or built-on lot ready: clearing, grubbing, and rough grading. Most projects get the lot prepped first, then specific surfaces graded, and we handle both as separate services.

Can grading fix water pooling in my yard?

Often, yes. If water sits because the ground is flat or sloped toward the house, regrading it to fall the right way sends that water off instead of letting it pool. If the water problem needs buried pipe or a collection system, that's drainage work, and we do that too as a separate service.

Do you grade before paving, a concrete pour, or a pad?

Yes, that's most of what grading is for. We bring the ground to the slope and level the next step needs, then it's ready to be paved, prepped for a slab, or built into a pad. The paving and the pour are done by those trades; we get the grade right underneath.
